Description:

The tin tetrachloride industrial product is a colorless or light yellow liquid. When exposed to the air, it reacts with moisture in the air to produce white smoke. It is strongly irritating and decomposes when exposed to water to produce hydrochloric acid and stannous acid. In case of humid air, it will hydrolyze to produce tin and hydrogen chloride, and white smoke will be generated, which is corrosive. It forms a pentahydrate with a calculated amount of water, white translucent monoclinic crystals, and deliquescence in the air. Soluble in cold water and emit a lot of heat, soluble in ethanol, ether, benzene, toluene, carbon tetrachloride. Decomposes in hot water. Absorb water in humid air to generate trihydrate. Further water is added to generate 5, 8, 9 and other compounds with different amounts of crystal water. Anhydrous tin chloride can absorb a large amount of chlorine gas at low temperature, and at the same time, the volume formation expands and the freezing point drops; it can react with ammonia to form a double salt; it can react with alkali metals to form stannate. It hydrolyzes strongly in water, so it fumes in humid air; it is soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, carbon tetrachloride, benzene, acetone, etc.
Hydrochloric acid can inhibit its hydrolysis. In the range of 19~56℃, hydrochloric acid can make tin tetrachloride precipitate as colorless hydrated crystals SnCl4·5H2O from the concentrated solution.
