Methotrexate (MTX), formerly known as amethopterin, is a chemotherapeutic agent and an immune system suppressant. It is used to treat cancer, autoimmune diseases, ectopic pregnancy, and medical abortion. The types of cancer that have been used include breast cancer, leukemia, lung cancer, lymphoma, and osteosarcoma. The types of autoimmune diseases by which they are used include psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, and Crohn’s disease. It can be administered orally or by injection.
Methotrexate interferes with the growth of certain cells in the body, especially rapidly growing cells such as cancer cells, bone marrow cells and skin cells. Methotrexate is used to treat certain types of cancer of the breast, skin, head and neck, or lung. It is also used to treat severe psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis. Methotrexate is usually given after trying other medications without effectively treating symptoms. Methotrexate may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
